The Construction Industry Council (CIC) is organising this Research Forum Webinar (Webinar) for prominent researchers to share their latest research achievements, and practitioners to share their real-life applications of research outcomes. Through this webinar, practitioners and researchers could exchange views on research needs and explore ways for more fruitful collaboration which could facilitate adoption of research products in construction practice.

We are privileged to have Mr Ken HO from SmarTone, to share an integrated platform -SmartWork, to enhance construction workers' health, safety and operational efficiency, and Prof. Songye ZHU from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, to share his research about using smartphones as vibrations and noise monitoring devices.

SmartWorks - Integrating Technology and Humanity (Conducted in Cantonese)

As the number of large-scale constructions in Hong Kong increases, the quality, safety and environmental performance of construction works is becoming more of a public concern. In this webinar, the speaker will elaborate how the innovative technologies and the 5G network enhance occupational safety, workers’ health and operation efficiency through case sharing.  Awarded the Construction Safety 1st Prize  in the CIC Construction Innovation Award 2019, SmartWorks leverages the 5G network, massive IoT, artificial intelligence and more cutting-edge technologies to develop a series of sensory equipment. 

Fixed network coverage may not be always available at remote construction site, 5G network becomes vital and much more flexible to supporting massive sensory device connection. Smartphone as Next-generation Monitoring Devices for Construction-induced Vibrations and Noise (Conducted in English)
Presented by Prof Songye ZHU, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University

Excessive vibration and noise generated by various construction activities may adversely impact surrounding environments by causing structural damage, noise pollution, human discomfort, or equipment malfunction. Vibration and noise monitoring is a standard and effective measure to protect the surroundings against such disturbance. By leveraging the rapid development of smartphone technology, this project aims to develop the next-generation smartphone-empowered paradigm for monitoring and assessing the impact of construction-induced vibration and noise. Thanks to advanced features of smartphones, the developed ad hoc App can not only measures vibration and noise with respect to multiple indices, but also offers diversified functions, such as great mobility, user-friendly interface, recording GPS and photos, convenient data sharing and cloud storage. These appealing features will make this App an up-and-coming solution for on-site vibration and noise monitoring. This presentation will introduce the development, major functions, user guides, and field trials of the smartphone monitoring App.

Joined SmarTone since 2006, leading a team of enterprise solution specialist and consultancy on telecom services and ICT solutions, as well as innovative solutions for construction industry; providing professional advice along their digital transformation journey. Graduated Master of Business Administration from Hong Kong Polytechnic University.

Prof. Songye ZHU
Professor, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University

Prof. Songye ZHU obtained his BEng and MSc degrees in structural engineering from Tongji University (China) and his PhD degree in civil engineering from Lehigh University (USA). He is currently a full professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. His major research interests include smart materials and structures, structural control and health monitoring, vibration impact assessment, renewable energy, etc. He has published over 100 refereed journal papers and won numerous international research awards. Currently, he is also serving as Editor of Advances in Structural Engineering and Associate Editor of International Journal of Nano and Smart Materials. He was the Past President of the American Society of Civil Engineers—Hong Kong Section.
