Advancing BIM and Digital Twin Adoption in the Construction Sector

The Construction Industry Council (CIC) is dedicated to digitalising the construction sector by promoting the adoption of Building Information Modeling (BIM) and digital technologies.

Supporting the BIM Adoption

Since 2014, we have undertaken extensive initiatives to support and encourage the industry in embracing BIM. That year, we published the “Roadmap for BIM Strategic Implementation in Hong Kong's Construction Industry,” which outlines strategies for market transformation and fosters cross-disciplinary collaboration.

CIC's support for the industry encompasses five key areas:

1.      Promotion of BIM Adoption

·       We organise various webinars, seminars, events, and competitions to promote BIM adoption.

2.      Training Programs

·       The School of Professional Development in Construction offers various BIM Training to upskilling our professional.

3.      Development of Standards, Guidelines, and Specifications

·       We have published the 12 BIM Standards, 2 BIM-related Case Sharing, 3 Beginner’s Guides and 1 white papers for industry use.

4.      Strategic Framework Establishment

·       The roadmap provides a comprehensive framework for digitalisation in the industry.

5.      Certification and Accreditation

·       Since the launch of the BIM Certification and Accreditation Scheme in 2019, the CIC has certified 853 Certified BIM Coordinators and 681 Certified BIM Managers, enhancing the skill sets of the workforce in alignment with digitalisation trends. Additionally, the CIC has accredited 25 BIM Coordinator courses and 16 BIM Manager courses to align the course content with industry standards.

Harnessing the Power of Digital Twins

We remain committed to staying at the forefront of the Digitalisation trend within the construction industry. As we continue to explore and implement innovative technologies, our goal is to enhance processes and drive efficiency. In 2021, the CIC further published the Construction Digitalisation Roadmap to lead Hong Kong's construction industry into a new digital era. The vision is set – SMART Construction Empowered by Digitalisation: all processes involved in the built asset lifecycle are streamlined and digitalised to continuously improve productivity and safety during planning, design, construction and operation, and sustainability for better quality of life. Our vision is to achieve 100% adoption of digitalisation, including digital tools for site supervision and monitoring, BIM, and Common Data Environments (CDE), for projects exceeding HK$300 million.

To further accelerate digitalisation and promote the use of digital twins, the CIC established the “CIC Digital Twin Hub” in 2023. This hub, transformed from the previous “CIC BIM Space,” serves as a collaborative platform that offers a variety of technological showcases aimed at facilitating knowledge exchange, nurturing talent, and inspiring innovation in digital twins and construction technology.

𝗖𝗜𝗖 𝗟𝗮𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗵𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 “𝗖𝗜𝗖 𝗠𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗖𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝗗𝗶𝗴𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗧𝘄𝗶𝗻”

The CIC official launched the CIC Master Class on Digital Twin earlier this year. This program is designed to equip professional practitioners with a comprehensive understanding of the practical applications of Digital Twin technology within the construction industry. Our goal is to empower our practitioners with the necessary skills to leverage this transformative technology in their roles. By embracing Digital Twin, we can collectively advance digital transformation and create a more efficient, safer, and sustainable construction environment.

CIC Flagship Event on Construction Digitalisation

This year, we are proud to host the second Construction Digitalisation Award to recognise industry pioneers in digital transformation. The award presentation will take place at our flagship event, the Global Construction Digitalisation Forum and Exhibition.

This grand event will feature a comprehensive program that includes forums, exhibitions, and the award presentation, showcasing the latest advancements and innovations in the construction sector.
